IC&E from Elgin to Savanna...Normally I would put this on my Trainpictures.net site, but since it's currently getting a re-vamping, I'm putting this here for now. The following was taken from the Yahoo Groups IC&E list, emails have been hidden to stop spam. If anyone objects to their email being here, please let me know. I just wanted to stick it all in one place so it doesn't get lost in my sea of email.--- snip --- [ICErail] Railfan trip Elgin-Savanna From: "Brian R. Swan" To: icerail Hi all, I'm new to the group, and some friends and I are planning a little trip to the quad-cities area to explore the IC&E. None of us are all that familiar with the IC&E, so it will be a learning experience for all of us. My initial thought was to head west from the Elgin area and follow the IC&E all the way to Savanna, and then head south from there to the Davenport area. However, having lived in the Elgin area for 3 years prior to the inception of the IC&E, there wasn't a whole lot of action on the IMRL tracks up that way. If we leave early morning on Saturday, what's the possibility that we'd see anything as we head west toward Savanna? Can any seasoned IC&E fans give us some tips? I was also researching track detector to aid us in our railfanning. I have an old Soo line (circa 1987) timetable that lists detectors at MP 53.0 (Hampshire), and MP 98.6 (Leaf River) between Pingree Grove and Savanna. Between Savanna and Davenport, I've got MP 143.0 (Sabula Draw Bridge?), MP 162.4 (Camanche), MP 233.6 (Letts), and MP 274.5 (Richland). Are those still accurate? Thanks for your help! Swannie --- snip --- [ICErail] Railfan trip Elgin-Savanna From: "TERRY L. PETERSON" To: ICErail List, Another side note, the Old# 922 Job does not normally go to DJ on Saturdays. It goes to J-ville & back on Saturday's, as a usual !!! Sunday is the "day of rest". The #922 normally goes to DJ on M/W/F's, but sometimes they will switch whole trains with the #920 in Rockford, depending on the #920's work load !!! Later !!! AS OF 17:18 HOURS; DISPATCHER'S INITIALS ARE: TLP --- snip --- Re: [ICErail] Railfan trip Elgin-Savanna From: "Joel G. Kirchner" To: ICErail I should know more about the east end ops but I don't. As far as I can tell MBENA runs every other day and usually hits Elgin during the morning Metra rush. He'll usually call Tower B-17 to announce his arrival at Randall Rd., as he comes into Pingree Grove. Once he clears the single track he'll call the ICE dispatcher, release his track warrant and give an arrival time at Randall Rd. Radio Channels are (Metra side) 161.520 and IC&E 161.085. Don't think the Davis Turn operates on Saturday. (Lance can you clarify?) If they don't you should find their power at Davis Jct. Unless there's an extra grain train, that would be about it to Savanna in the morning. The detectors are in the same places as the SOO. For more up to date info, check out my IC&E website http://www.illinirail.com/icerr/ There's a current timetable listing mileposts and detector locations. When I go out to Davenport from the Elgin area, I run along Rte 72 to Hampshire or Davis Jct. looking for MBENA, then I cut south to I-88 and make a bee-line for Davenport as there's a lot of morning action during the week. I'm not sure on the weekend however. Perhaps Tom McNair could chime in here. -- snip --- Re: [ICErail] Railfan trip Elgin-Savanna From: wales To: ICErail In a message dated 12/14/03 1:34:44 AM, illinirail writes: << Don't think the Davis Turn operates on Saturday. They are usually on duty around 7 a.m. at Davis Junction. Their usual work consists of switching the cars out that will go up to Rockford and beyond on the branch to Janesville, WI and then going into Spaudling, IL to work the EJ&E interchange. As Terry mentioned, they can work up to Rockford on some weekdays to exchange cars with the West Yard based (South Beloit, IL) #922 job. The 922 job works Monday through Saturday, and again as Terry said, works from W. Yard up to Janesville and back to W. Yard on Saturday mornings. I chased him back this last May on a Saturday morning and they get an early start out of there--around 5:30 a.m. so you've got to get up early to do anything with him on the weekend. There usually isn't any power around Davis Junction from late Friday night/early Saturday morning when the wb M-BRNA train picks it up for weekend servicing at Nahant, until early Sunday morning--dropped off by the M-NABR. So if you're passing through on Saturday, the wye tracks will probably be devoid of locomotives. The earlier posting missed the hotbox detector that is between Fairdale and Monroe Center around m.p. 73.6 I think.
